Dreaming of getting fired from work: what it usually means

, founder of Dreamly ·

Dreaming of getting fired from work is usually read as a sign of insecurity: worry about your job, your money or your standing, or a fear of not being good enough somewhere that matters to you. It almost never predicts a real dismissal. It tends to show up when you feel judged, replaceable or stretched thin, and sometimes when part of you wants out.

Work is one of the things we dream about most. In the Dreamly analysis of 189,480 dreams, work, school and exams fill 10.5% of an average dream journal. A 2020 survey of 1,695 adults led by Michael Schredl put it higher still, with about one dream in five tied to a current or past job, and found that people with more stressful jobs had more work dreams, and gloomier ones.

So check the obvious first. Talk of layoffs, a tense review next week, a project that’s slipping: the dream may simply be rehearsing it. Plenty of people have reason to. In the American Psychological Association’s 2025 Work in America survey of 2,017 employed adults, 44% said they worried a downturn could cost them their job within the year, and among them, 42% said work stress made it hard to sleep.

What does it mean to dream of being fired from work?

A dream of being fired is mostly about how secure you feel in your role, and the scene usually tells you where the doubt comes from. Two details do most of the work: who fired you, and the reason they gave.

Fired by your boss

Being fired by your current boss is the most direct version. It often goes with feeling watched or judged by that person, or waiting for a verdict you can’t control, like a review, a reorganization or a decision about your contract. An old boss brings in an older standard you still measure yourself against. A boss you’ve never seen is closer to authority in general: the feeling that someone, somewhere, is deciding whether you’re good enough. Our page on boss dreams goes further into that figure.

Fired for no reason

Being fired for no reason usually reflects a sense that your effort isn’t seen. You’re doing the work, and it doesn’t seem to count. These dreams tend to come in periods of unclear feedback, quiet reorganizations or a new manager whose expectations you can’t read.

Fired for a mistake

A firing over a mistake points to a fear of getting something wrong, often a specific thing. If you remember the mistake, compare it with your week. Sometimes it’s a real slip you’re worried about. More often it’s perfectionism: one error, blown up into the end of everything.

Your reaction is the real clue

How you felt when it happened says more than the firing itself. Two people can have the same dream and mean opposite things by it.

Panic, shame or crying go with insecurity: money, reputation, the fear of starting over. Anger goes with unfairness, a sense that you’re being treated worse than you deserve. Relief is the surprising one. Walking out of the office feeling lighter often points to burnout, or to a wish to leave that you haven’t admitted yet. Not always, though. Sometimes the relief is just about escaping a tense scene.

Take the feeling at face value. David Kahn (2019) found that dreamers react to people and events in dreams much as they would awake, even when the situation is unlikely. If you were relieved, you were relieved.

Dreaming of someone else getting fired

Dreaming of someone else getting fired from work usually reflects worry about that person, or about yourself through them. If it’s a colleague, the dream can be plain concern, or the quieter thought behind it: if they can go, so can I.

Sometimes it’s rivalry. A colleague you compete with being let go can carry a small, guilty wish, and that’s normal enough not to worry about. A partner or parent losing their job points to shared security: money, plans, the stability of the household. If you’re anxious about being replaced by technology rather than by a person, our page on dreams about AI taking your job covers that version.

Dreaming of being fired from an old job

Getting fired from a job you left years ago is less strange than it sounds. In Schredl’s survey, people who were no longer working still put about 15% of their dreams at work, and stress from their former job still predicted how often. On average, they had stopped working about nine years earlier.

An old job in a dream usually stands for an old version of you: the person you were there, the standards you had to meet, the boss who made you doubt yourself. Being fired from it often turns up when something today brings back that same feeling of being tested. It’s worth asking what, this week, felt like that place.

Spiritual meaning of getting fired in a dream

In spiritual readings, getting fired in a dream is usually seen as the end of a role: being released from something that no longer fits so that something else can start. These are beliefs, not findings, but they explain why some people wake up from this dream oddly calm.

Hindu dream readings collected on Hindu Blog treat being sacked as a warning sign first, then list fears about job security, feeling undervalued and a wish for a new direction, and finally a transition: letting go of the old to make room for the new.

The spiritual and psychological readings meet on one point. The dream is about your place and your direction, not about your employer’s plans.

What to do after a dream about getting fired

First, don’t act on the dream itself. Don’t resign, confront your boss or start sending applications because a dream felt convincing. Look at the real signals instead: recent feedback, what’s actually expected of you, what you know about your company’s plans.

Then write down who fired you, the reason, and how you felt walking out. Ask where in your life you feel replaceable, unseen or tired right now. It isn’t always work. The same dream can follow a breakup, a money worry or a family conflict, anywhere your place feels uncertain. Our pages on work dreams and losing money in a dream cover the neighbors of this one.

If the dream comes back, compare the versions. Same boss? Same reason? Does the ending change? A private dream journal like Dreamly lets you note the dream and the feeling, see what returns from one night to the next, and get a reading of your own dream instead of a generic one.

And if work stress is keeping you awake most nights, that’s the part to deal with. A doctor or a therapist can help, and so can a frank talk with your manager about the workload.

Is dreaming of getting fired a bad sign?

No. It’s a sign of stress or doubt, not of what will happen. It’s useful because it shows where the pressure is. If you felt relieved in the dream, it may even point to a change you want.

Does dreaming of being fired mean I will lose my job?

No. Dreams don’t predict layoffs. They replay worries, and if you’ve been worried about your job, the dream reflects that worry. Use what you actually know about your situation to judge the risk, not the dream.

Why do I keep dreaming about getting fired?

Most likely because the pressure behind it hasn’t changed: a demanding boss, unclear feedback, a job you’re unsure about. Recurring versions often fade once something concrete moves, like a conversation, a decision, or simply a calmer stretch at work.

What does it mean to dream of getting fired and crying?

Crying in the dream usually means the fear behind it is strong and real: money, identity, or the shame of being let go. It’s a sign to look at how much your sense of worth rests on this job, and whether someone in your life knows how worried you are.
